A “weblog,” commonly referred to as a “blog” is a type of website or part of a website that is regularly updated with news commentary, personal reflections, company news, descriptions of events, photos, and/or videos. These blog entries, which are also known as “blog posts,” are usually displayed in reverse-chronological order and can range in length from a single photo to a few choice sentences to multiple pages.
To “blog” is to update a blog with fresh content. When used in this content, it takes the form of a verb.
A person who writes for a blog, that is, a person who blogs, is known as a blogger. A blog can be updated by one or more bloggers. Some blogs, such as The Huffington Post, are regularly updated with content from several hundred bloggers. The term guest blogger refers to a writer who contributes from time to time to a blog, yet is not one one of its primary content producers.
Most blogs allow readers to comment on blog posts, which gives blog content a unique perspective on issues when compared with print articles and static websites. Entire discussions can take place on blogs via commentary.
Another form of the weblog is the microblog. Microblogging services such as Twitter allow users to post brief updates on the subjects of their choice. In the case of Twitter, users are limited to 140 characters per update, or “tweet.”
