Terre,

Thanks for your comments. I think the reason the major wine companies are in favor is that they want to be seen to be good corporate citizens. I am sure they realize there will be more costs, but having a more transparent product will probably help their image - they won't be hiding anything any more.

If the new labeling regulations are enacted, I agree with you Peter that the labels won't look nearly as bad as what's shown in the photo here. There's a bit of flexibility in the size of nutritional labels, and at worst it might only be about 4" tall and a little over 1" wide.

As a consumer I think nutritional/ingredient labeling is a good idea. Even organic wines can contain sulpher, for example, which is unpalatable to some people. I'm not a drinker, but I live on California's central coast, which has become a major wine-producing region in the United States.

Still, as a designer, I'm not looking forward to additional labeling on wine bottles. I love the artistic nature of wine labeling, the focus on an interesting or beautiful label, isolated on a shapely bottle with a matching seal and uncluttered by everything that clogs up the look of most other packaging.

I'm not sure why the major wine companies are in favor, as it adds cost and reduces the mystique that is so much a part of the wine experience for people.

I suppose I should be happy about it, as some of that extra cost will be spent on me, the wine label designer. Cheers!
